The Vercors

The Vercors regional nature parkParc naturel régional du Vercors

The Vercors mountains, located between the cities of Grenoble and Valence, count no less than 200 000 hectares and is composed of eight natural regions: Vercors-Drome Royans-Drôme, Isère Royans, Diois Trieves, Quatre-Montagnes, Gervanne and Piémont Nord.

This preserved and protected territory, regional natural park since 1970, is characterized by the exceptional richess both of its reliefs, fauna and flora. Here, landscapes are as diverse as memorable, made of uplands, forests, cliffs and gorges.

The Vercors regional nature park rises to 2453m (Rocher Rond).

Upland nature reserve of Vercors

Located at the foot of the Grand Veymont (the highest point of Vercours : 2,341 m), at the cusp between the north and south pre-alps, the nature reserve of the high plateau of Vercors offers it’s visitors a landscape beyond compare.

A number of remarkable species are sheltered here, like the marmotte, the black grouse, the chamois and also the golden eagle, to name a few of the most well known.

This protected and therefore controlled area is accessible to all. There has been a strong seasonal human presence here since pre historic times. It has been pastoral, used for grazing for more than a thousand years. And today it is hiking that has been mainly developed.
The wild aspect of the nature reserve requires daily management, which is carried out by the Parc du Vercors. Thanks to the actions taken by the park, the fauna and flora, the natural environment and the well built heritage are all preserved. Also, the constant presence of 5 technical wardens ensures the informing and welcoming of hikers, a surveillance mission and scientific studies amongst other things.
