Located at the foot of the Grand Veymont (the highest point of Vercours : 2,341 m), at the cusp between the north and south pre-alps, the nature reserve of the high plateau of Vercors offers it’s visitors a landscape beyond compare.
A number of remarkable species are sheltered here, like the marmotte, the black grouse, the chamois and also the golden eagle, to name a few of the most well known.
This protected and therefore controlled area is accessible to all. There has been a strong seasonal human presence here since pre historic times. It has been pastoral, used for grazing for more than a thousand years. And today it is hiking that has been mainly developed.
The wild aspect of the nature reserve requires daily management, which is carried out by the Parc du Vercors. Thanks to the actions taken by the park, the fauna and flora, the natural environment and the well built heritage are all preserved. Also, the constant presence of 5 technical wardens ensures the informing and welcoming of hikers, a surveillance mission and scientific studies amongst other things.
